Prioritizing Self-Care in College

By: Taylor Tinsley

I hate to bring bad news... but finals week is coming. Juggling late nights, deadlines, and multiple commitments can be an intimidating task for anyone.

Mental health and self care can seem less important than school/work-related responsibilities, but neglecting them can have consequences on your health and well being. Remember to take some time for yourself.

Start by taking a deep breath and putting in scheduled times to take a break in between studying or homework assignments.

Here are few more tips to maintain a good self-care routine:

Drink more water. It is hard to remember and can be annoying to carry around water all day, but do it. Your body and mind will thank you and you will have more energy and stamina overall while trying to crush those finals.

Cook a new recipe: Try cooking a new recipe to develop better eating habits and find enjoyment in cooking meals for yourself. When you eat well, you feel better, you may even discover a new hobby you weren’t aware of before.

Check out campus events: IU offers many different concerts, shows, art exhibits and ways to meet new friends at the same time. By taking advantage of these opportunities, you will have the chance to build everlasting friendships and explore IU history and culture.

Watch a comedy or something to make yourself laugh: Putting on a funny TV show or movie can be a good cure to stress and to let your mind take a break. Laughter is great self-care!

Take a digital detox: Unplugging from the online world can be essential if you are spending all day at a computer. Take a walk outside around campus to give your eyes and head a break from the computer screen. It is also a good idea to set timers when you are on social media platforms to decrease the time each day you spend online.

Seek help when needed: If you are struggling with mental health, always talk to a counselor or a mental health professional. Your mental well-being is the most important and seeking professional help can make a meaningful difference.
